Background of the Study

Continuing education is critical in the nursing profession as it allows nurses to stay current with the latest advancements in healthcare, improve their clinical competencies, and adapt to the evolving healthcare environment (Adeleke et al., 2023). Continuing education programs provide opportunities for nurses to enhance their professional skills, knowledge, and abilities, contributing to improved patient outcomes and increased job satisfaction (Abubakar & Sambo, 2024). These programs are designed to ensure that nurses meet the demands of a rapidly changing healthcare landscape, including new technologies, updated clinical guidelines, and evolving healthcare policies (Ajayi & Aliyu, 2023).

In Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery, continuing education is an essential part of the professional development program for nurses. These programs are offered to nurses at various levels of their careers and cover a wide range of topics, including clinical skills, leadership, patient care techniques, and healthcare management (Oluwaseun et al., 2024). However, the effectiveness of continuing education programs in promoting professional development is not well-documented, especially in resource-constrained settings like Kaduna State.

This study aims to investigate the role of continuing education programs in enhancing the professional development of nurses in Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery. By exploring how these programs contribute to nurses' knowledge, skills, and career progression, this research will provide valuable insights into the role of education in nursing practice and suggest ways to improve continuing education for nurses in this region.

Statement of the Problem

Although continuing education is vital for the professional development of nurses, there is limited evidence regarding the actual impact of these programs on nursing practice in Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery. Without an evaluation of the effectiveness of continuing education programs, it is challenging to determine whether they are achieving the desired outcomes in improving the professional development of nurses. This gap in knowledge necessitates an investigation into the role of continuing education in shaping the professional development of nurses and its contribution to the quality of patient care in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the role of continuing education programs in enhancing the professional development of nurses at Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery.

2. To evaluate how continuing education impacts nurses' clinical skills, knowledge, and career advancement.

3. To propose recommendations for improving continuing education programs for nurses at Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery.

Research Questions

1. How do continuing education programs contribute to the professional development of nurses at Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery?

2. What impact do continuing education programs have on nurses' clinical skills and knowledge?

3. How can continuing education programs be improved to enhance professional development for nurses in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Continuing education programs significantly improve the professional development of nurses at Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery.

2. Nurses who participate in continuing education programs demonstrate higher levels of clinical skills and knowledge compared to those who do not.

3. The effectiveness of continuing education programs can be enhanced by incorporating practical, hands-on training and leadership development.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nurses at Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery, specifically investigating the impact of continuing education on their professional development. Limitations may include challenges in accessing specific data on the effectiveness of continuing education programs and potential biases in self-reported data.
